Guest Blogger and Chave and Jackson customer Spencer Lewis, reviews the latest fragrances for men – Just in time for Father’s Day!
Friday June 06, 2014
Hi I'm Spencer. I have been asked by Chave and Jackson to review a few new Men’s fragrances, all of which are very much suitable for the hotter temperatures of summer. All of the fragrances are Eau De Toilette.
I've been very much into fragrance for years now, as I see it as being a way to add the cherry on top of everything else. If you've had a good night’s sleep, you're dressed up and you've got your lucky boxer shorts on, how else can you make yourself feel even better? Fragrance. When you get the bug, you'll have fragrances for Summer, fragrances for Winter, ones for the evening and ones for the office... you'll also likely encounter ones that you start to use as air freshener just to get rid of the things!
So here are my thoughts on some of the latest fragrances for Summer 2014...
Bleu De Chanel is a classic for a reason. It is very safe and very popular but in this instance, that isn't a bad thing at all. This is a perfect all year 'round fragrance but probably best suited to Summer. I put it in the same category as Acqua Di Gio and L'eau D'Issey. Distinctive and classy. I actually prefer both Acqua Di Gio and L'eau D'Issey.
I rate Bleu de Chanel 8 out of 10
Terre D'Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche is great. I didn't even know it existed and I'm glad it does because I can't wear Terre D'Hermes due to a close friend wearing it. It retains the earthiness and dryness of the original but they've successfully added a summer twist to it. The top has a massively convincing smell of fresh and almost orange peel, but then, as I said before, it turns into the spicy signature earthiness of the original Terre D'Hermes. The price tag for it is high, but it doesn't smell synthetic at all. It smells like quality.
I rate Terre D’Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche 8 out of 10
Prada Luna Rossa isn't too bad. I don't get the impression that it projects very well but I do have a friend who wears it, and it certainly works for him. Upon the first sniff, I was worried that it was another generic fresh summer fragrance, but it is actually reasonably distinctive. This one is perfect for summer, but due to the aforementioned worries about how strong it is, I'd prefer to get it in it's Eau De Parfum variety, which Chave and Jackson stock.
I rate Prada Luna Rossa 7 out of 10
Karl Lagerfeld Pour Homme I'm not a fan of. There's nothing wrong with it as such, I just see fragrance as being a way of giving you an extra five percent. It's like the cherry on top when it comes to getting ready for a day, and this fragrance is just quite bland. When you think of Karl Lagerfeld, you don't really think of the word 'bland', which is why I think this fragrance fails. Nothing new.
I rate Karl Lagerfeld Pour Homme 5 out of 10
Paul Smith Extreme Sport is again, nothing to write home about as such, but there's a time and a place for cheaper Summer fragrances and this is £22. It's what you'd expect from a Summer fragrance, so very fresh, very clean, but I'd be inclined to opt for something like Cool Water if I was looking to get something along these lines.
I rate Paul Smith Extreme Sport 6 out of 10
Finally Mont Blanc Emblem reminds me of both Carolina Herrera 212 VIP for Men, and then again, although not quite as closely, 1 Million by Paco Rabanne. If either of those scents are your bag, then you're really better off with 1 Million. As popular as that
fragrance is, you can't really beat it in terms of strength and longevity. I'm not really a fan of this type of fragrance any more, but it certainly has a market and with it being not as strong as 1 Million, it might be a better choice for summer, I wouldn't feel happy giving it a score, though. If you like 1 Million, then you could give it a try as a summer alternative.
For me, Fragrance is a deeply personal thing and I'd always recommend going into Chave and asking the staff for their opinions and ideas and maybe sniffing a few different scents out. Two of my favourite fragrances are L'instant de Guerlain Eau Extreme and Dior Homme Intense.
Fragrance, just like wine, needs to be tried and tested!
